How Can We Help - Case Studies

How we helped Robert and Sarah...

A call to the FREE Veterans Helpline notified the Agency of the urgent situation, Robert, a disabled veteran from Gosport, and his partner Sarah had found themselves in.

Homeless through no fault of there own, they were living in a car on a public car park and using nearby conveniences to wash and launder their clothes.  Their only income was Robert's army and war pension. Their situation had become unbearable and they were both at the end of their tether.

A Veterans welfare manager was able to meet them that day and advice was given on entitlement to additional benefits and allowances.  The local council was contacted and arrangements were made to place them in temporary housing.

Through continued support, and by working in partnership with the council and The Royal British Legion (TRBL), permanent accommodation has since been found, with TRBL providing help with finances, funding for furniture and work on the house.

Robert and Sarah have now been able to make a fresh start.  Robert says "I hit lucky with Veterans Agency and now I'm back on my feet."

How we helped John from West Yorkshire.

John joined the Royal Navy in 1979 and served for almost 10 years, seeing active Service onboard HMS Intrepid during the Falklands conflict.  He left the Navy in 1989 but found he had problems with sleeping, including anxiety attacks and nightmares.  This was later diagnosed as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

John says: "I first met Helen, my Veterans Welfare Manager about 2-3 years ago.  We discussed setting up a PTSD help group, but at the time I wasn't mentally prepared.  As time progressed, I managed to get my mindset right and completed an initial counselling course at my local college.  I spoke to Helen again and the encouragement from her has really spurred me on.  I'm now just finishing a confidence building and self esteem course at SHIP - the Self Help Initiatives Project sponsored by the charity MIND.  Once I complete this, I'll have gained something monumental in terms of self achievement."

How we helped Susan from York

Susan is a single mum from York with four young children.  She served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the first Gulf War in 1991.  Working in a field hospital, she witnessed first hand the injuries suffered by members of the Iraqi forces during the conflict, leaving her with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Susan has been helped for many years by the Veterans Welfare service in Yorkshire.  She says "I first met Helen, my Welfare Manager when I moved to York from Chester a few years ago, she's fantastic - she sorted out my war pension and helped me build a support network from the many different Agencies involved.  More women veterans should apply for the help that's out there"
