CHELSEA PENSIONERS’ UNVEIL NEW INFIRMARY

blind people

Chelsea Pensioners welcomed Lady Thatcher to the Royal Hospital Chelsea,
to announce officially the name of the new Infirmary
‘The Margaret Thatcher Infirmary’.

Ready for occupation by the start of 2009, the Infirmary will have 125 beds, an increase of 36 on its predecessor. For the first time in its history, Royal Hospital Chelsea will be able to admit women and also to provide respite care facilities to veterans from the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. The Hospital is also exploring ways in which it can offer some of its facilities to those currently serving in the Army

Karen Smith, Matron of the Royal Hospital Chelsea said: “Our veteran soldiers deserve the best quality medical support, and the new Infirmary will signify everything that is good about state-of-the-art care for the elderly, in a unique environment. Whilst it will modernise aspects of daily life and offer a range of new services, we know the new building will not change the famous Chelsea Pensioner spirit and comradeship.”

The Royal Hospital is independent of the Government. The Ministry of Defence pays for the majority of the running costs and for routine building maintenance, but it does not fund new buildings. The new infirmary has been funded by the Chelsea Pensioners’ Appeal.

Tasked with raising £35 million by the end of the summer 2008, the appeal will also help fund the modernisation of the Pensioners’ living quarters in Sir Christopher Wren’s historic long wards.
