New Housing Opens doors for Service Leavers

General (Retd) Sir Mike Jackson has opened the new supported housing for single Service leavers that has been named in his honour.

The first residents will soon arrive in Mike Jackson House – a block of 25 modern single units (including two with wheelchair access). Situated within the boundaries of Aldershot Garrison, its opening represents a vital and much needed expansion of housing, support and training for single Armed Forces leavers. Its facilities provide IT and ‘life skills’ training, communal areas and a gym. There will even be some cooking lessons by Garrison chefs so residents can avoid a reliance on ready meals and take-aways!

This £2m project is a successful partnership between the MOD, who gifted the land in Aldershot Garrison, the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) who provided most of the capital funding, Hampshire County and Rushmore Borough Councils, and the charity English Churches Housing Group (ECHG) who managed the project.

This is the ECHG’s second supported housing venture, the first being the ‘Galleries’ in North Yorkshire, which has supported over a hundred Service leavers since it opened in 2003.

With the advent of Mike Jackson House, Service leavers in the south as well as those in the north of England will get the support they need for their successful return to civvy Street.

New Veterans Day Website
vets day webpage

April 14 saw the launch of an eye-catching new website, www.veteransday.org.uk, specifically designed to provide information to the public, and event organisers, about Veterans Day.

The website contains a whole host of information ranging from the history of Veterans Day through to video interviews with a range of veterans, in which they explain how the skills they learnt in the military have given them a head start in civilian life.

Event organisers can publish details of their event on the interactive calendar, which now includes maps to help people locate their local events. Full details of the National Veterans Day Event at Blackpool are also available.
