NATIONAL ARMED
FORCES DAY
27 JUNE 2009
The Historic Dockyard Chatham is proud to be the
venue for the first national Armed Forces Day. A day when the nation joins
with its armed Forces and veteran communities in recognition of the service
and sacrifice they have given over the years, and continue to make today. The
event will include flypasts by historic and current aircraft, including the
Red Arrows, have-a-go activities with the Armed Forces and a veterans’ parade
in the Dockyard. |

The
first Armed Forces Day is on 27 June 2009. It’s
an opportunity for the nation to show support for the men and women who
make the Armed Forces community: from veterans to recruits, and from
currently serving troops to the Service families.
Across the UK, people are getting involved: communities
are holding local events and businesses are showing their support through
promotional offers. The MOD is also encouraging councils, businesses and
homes across the country to show their support for Britain’s Armed
Forces by flying special flag designed for Armed Forces Day.
To kick off
the proceedings, hundreds of local councils have pledged to raise the Armed
Forces Day Flag at 10.30 am on 22 June.
Fly the flag
The design of the Armed
Forces Day flag is based on the Union Jack and it measures 5ft by 3ft. Flags
cost £10,
which includes VAT, postage and packaging to UK addresses. The flag
supplier, Piggotts, will donate £1 from every sale to the Forces Children’s
Trust - a charity devoted to helping dependant children that have lost a
parent whilst serving with the Armed Forces.
Those interested in ordering
an Armed Forces Day Flag should visit www.piggotts.co.uk or email
armedforcesdayflag@piggotts.co.uk.
For the National Event, The Historic Dockyard Chatham opens its doors, so
you can learn more about the Army, Navy and RAF, meet members of local units
and lunch out surrounded by history. Chatham is just one event being held
in support of Armed Forces Day; find out what’s going on near you by
visiting the Events Calendar at www.armedforcesday.org.uk.
