FINDING REFUGE IN THE FALKLANDS
27 years after the Falklands Conflict, two organisations have joined forces to build a refuge centre on the Islands.

255 British personnel died during the Conflict, and many veterans who served still bear the emotional scars from battle today. Building on the idea that revisiting the Islands would help heal those scars, the South Atlantic Medal Association 1982 (SAMA 82) and the Falklands Veterans’ Foundation got together and raised funds to build a refuge for veterans to stay.

Officially opened in February 09, the Lodge was fully booked for the first three months and reservation enquiries are flooding in.Applicants may apply both for Indulgence (these are discounted flights to the Islands available to veterans who qualify) and use of the Lodge by writing to SAMA 82, Indulgence Application Centre, 33, Charlton Court, Brancote Road, Prenton, Birkenhead, CH43 6XE. A recent pilgrim to the Lodge, Mike Norman (HMS Sheffield) said, “I am extremely impressed with everything here; it is a wonderful facility of which you all must be extremely proud. It has been good revisiting old friends again. During my time here, I also laid a wreath at the HMS Sheffield Memorial Site on Sea Lion Island”.
