Coping with the Credit Crunch - New Advice Service Is Reaping The Benefits For Veterans

During its first year, a new Benefits and Money Advice Service identified a financial gain of some £2.5M for clients from: increases in benefit, decreases in debt and grants received.

The Advisers offer a holistic advice service on benefits and money matters to serving and ex-Service personnel, their partners and dependants.

The Benefits & Money Advice Service for London, based at Enfield CAB assisted Mr and Mrs Springer, who were in danger of losing their home.

WWII veteran Basil Springer has been suffering from Alzheimer’s for a year and is currently undergoing treatment for cancer; he is being cared for full-time by his wife Margaret. The couple’s house was to be re-possessed, but with financial guidance and practical assistance from CAB caseworkers with their rent arrears and utility bills, they are now able to stay in their home.

Margaret says, “When I first met with the CAB I was in a shocking emotional state as my husband has Alzheimer’s and cancer alongside the financial difficulties we had. Lorraine the caseworker was professional, understanding and calm and she put me at ease at a time when I was unable to think clearly. She kept in contact with me and helped me find the right paperwork. She gave us advice on managing our affairs for the future and helped us clear our debts. My husband had been in hospital recently for an operation, and he was prematurely discharged so he could be at home in familiar surroundings, a vital consideration for the mental and emotional well being of those affected by Alzheimer’s. Therefore, being able to stay and keep our home has meant even more to us. My husband and I are so grateful.”
