For over 70 years St Loye’s has been helping disabled adults confront some of life’s hardest challenges while training them for meaningful employment and the chance of social and economic independence. The focus has been on residential training and the provision of an established number of courses at the charity’s Exeter Campus. Now, a new business model recognizes a far wider range of disadvantages including long-term ill health and has introduced a ground-breaking, client focused approach which entails sourcing courses and training opportunities that best suit individuals rather than fitting those individuals into an existing programme at a single location.

St. Loye’s works with each client to agree motivating and achievable job goals, backed up by an individually tailored learning and personal support programme. Training can now take place anywhere in the UK while support may entail counselling or providing trainees with interview suits, tools of the trade and transport support. I never thought it would happen to me.

I lost my lower right arm and leg clearing land mines in Mozambique. I survived against the odds and then, just like others disabled by accident or illness, I wondered, 'Will I ever be able to work again?'

Thousands among us every year struggle to recover after losing a job through ill health, but realising you might never work again takes its toll on victim and family alike. Through effort and education I rebuilt my life and this has made me aware of the vital importance of the work of St Loye's Foundation, training men and women with disabilities for employment and an independent future with hope and dignity.

Chris Moon – veteran and President of St Loye's
