Surf Action Present to the National Gulf Veterans and Families Association at Butlins Skegness.
Surf Action the local military charity last week (19-21March) traveled the width of the country to meet and present to the National Gulf Veterans and Families Association (NGVFA) at Butlins in Skegness. Accompanied by Naval veteran Mike Warne, Directors Rich Emerson and Russ Pierre gave a 30-minute presentation to the members of the association and other welfare organisations about the great work they do here in Cornwall.
The NGVFA have been and running these respite weeks for 13 years and provides a weeks holiday for the families and the veterans of the first gulf war that took place in 1991. The past three years the NGVFA used Butlins in Skegness, which in 1939 was used as a Naval Training Base and named HMS Royal Arthur.
Surf Action jumped at this opportunity to meet the veterans and their families, but also NORCARE who provide a service across the North East for veterans needing support.
Mike Warne bravely presented his story of how Surf Action have helped him move forward in his life and now has the confidence to be a liaison officer for Alcoholic Anonymous here in Cornwall and represent Surf Action when meeting other veterans.
Rich Emerson, himself a Gulf War veterans found the three days emotional but said “the experience was amazing and we have made some great contacts and more families wanting to come to Cornwall, this is the first time I have been to an event like this with so many things in common with the other veterans“.
For the charity this week was about building relationships with veterans who need the same support as those in Cornwall and if Surf Action can provide a coastal holiday for these families that would be fantastic. The trip also planted the seed of taking Surf Action on the road and providing surfing to these veterans groups around the coastline of Britain.
Russ Pierre added “being an island we are surrounded by great waves and we have met people from all across Britain who have would love to surf but access can often be a problem, so maybe we have to take the surfing to them”.
Note: Surf Action are partly funded through the European Social Fund as a project delivered by Inclusion Cornwall and Cornwall Works.
