St Dunstan's Launches 100k London to Brighton Challenge

16 February 2011: St Dunstan’s, the national charity that provides lifelong support to blind Service and ex-Service personnel, today announces the launch of the 100k London to Brighton Challenge. Participants can register for the event at www.l2bwalk.com

Completely new to the UK , the event will see over 200 people take part in this unique 24 hour challenge, with St Dunstan’s hoping to reach their fundraising target of £100,000.

The event will start in Richmond , London on Saturday 11th June where participants will join hundreds of others walking through the night along footpaths across Surrey to a celebratory finish at the St Dunstan’s centre in Ovingdean, Brighton .

Already signed up for the challenge is St Dunstan’s beneficiary Mike Scholes, who lost most of his sight in 2007 due to a rare condition called Lebers Hereditary Optic Neuropathy. St Dunstan’s were there to support him in his recovery:

“The condition means that I have very limited peripheral vision as if I am permanently looking through a thick fog and can only see things if they are really close up or if there is a lot of contrast,” Mike said. “I certainly haven’t let it hold me back, and if anything I am more determined than ever to keep my independence and continue to take up challenges, like the 100k London to Brighton Challenge.”

Denise Yeats, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Dunstan's, added: “We’re looking for teams of up to 6 people to take part in the 100k London to Brighton Challenge, making it an excellent team building event or a new event for those wanting to take on a new challenge. Your support will help give more blind heroes an independent future, so you’ll not only be taking part in a fantastic event but giving support for an amazing cause."
