SIMON WESTON LAUNCHES THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE YEAR OF THE FALKLANDS CONFLICT & THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY LOGO

  • A year of fundraising and Pilgrimages culminating in the unveiling of a memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire
  • SAMA 82 has commissioned a Falklands Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to honour the South Atlantic Task Force and remember those who gave their lives.

Simon Weston OBE who was badly burnt during the Argentine bombing of RFA Sir Galahad, together with other SAMA 82, SAMA Wales and FVF members, all veterans of the 1982 Falklands Conflict, are to launch the 30th anniversary year of that conflict.

The launch will take place at 11 am Friday 24th June 2011 at the Falklands National Memorial in Alexandra Gardens, Cardiff.

During 2011 the South Atlantic Medal Association 1982 (SAMA 82) – an association formed in 1997 to support veterans and their families- will be organising many fundraising events, the main fundraiser being a sponsored walk up Pen y fan, Brecon, on Saturday 13th August, 2011.  (Registration, sponsorship forms and further details available upon request)

SAMA 82 is also organising return visits to the Falkland Islands for veterans including a planned pilgrimage next year for up to 50 veterans and family members of those killed in the conflict.

SAMA 82 has commissioned a Falklands Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to honour the South Atlantic Task Force and remember those who gave their lives.

The memorial will be distinctive, with a curved wall of rugged stone facing a rock from the Falklands and two benches, creating a restful space for contemplation by visitors.  The memorial will be dedicated on 20th May 2012 to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Talk Force Landings at San Carlos.

A memorial fund has been started to raise the £62,000 required to construct and maintain the memorial wall.
