Portsmouth & Gosport Home for Veterans to open in August
Alabaré’s Portsmouth & Gosport Home for Veterans, a supported housing project exclusively for homeless and vulnerable ex-Service men and women, is set to open next month.
Thanks to support from Seafarers UK, the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund and individuals, Alabaré’s Portsmouth & Gosport Home for Veterans will open its doors on the 22nd August.
Alabaré’s new veteran’s home, based in the Gosport area, will offer a unique combination of accommodation and support to ex-Service personnel who are struggling to adjust to civilian life. The project will provide a safe and supportive environment for 4 ex-Service men or women, hopefully extending to 7 or 8 in the future, and will provide a safe and supportive environment in which veterans can rebuild confidence and develop essential skills whilst working towards living independently again.
Alabaré staff will provide support in areas such as well-being, education, employment and housing, and veterans will be encouraged to access specialist help for issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, other mental health conditions or drug and alcohol addiction. Veterans will also be able to develop life skills such as budgeting and maintaining a home, skills they may never have needed whilst serving in the Forces.
Alabaré Portsmouth & Gosport Home for Veterans will be based on the model of the charity’s Plymouth Home for Veterans, which opened in partnership with The Royal British Legion in 2009. Within its first week of opening the project was full and demand for places has remained extremely high. Since then Alabaré has opened projects in Bristol and Weymouth and another project is earmarked for Cardiff in the near future.
Alabaré plans to continue the expansion of its veterans’ programme of support, with the opening of further projects across the South and South West. We are looking for volunteers to take part in the project – if you would like any further information, please contact Jo King on j.king@alabare.co.uk.
