Gordon Highlanders announce demonstrations to raise funds for veterans

A living history group, dressed in WW1 uniform and weaponry, will offer demonstrations to members of the public as part of a fundraising march to raise funds for veterans.

The Gordon Highlanders 1914-18 party is undertaking its inaugural Gordon Highlanders Erskine March in commemoration of the 95th anniversary of both the veterans’ charity Erskine and the Battle of the Somme .

As part of the 65-mile march which starts in Buckie on 6th June, members of the public will be able to take a step back in time to view demonstrations by the group in period uniform at different venues. These include:

·           Monday 6th June – Baxter’s Highland Village from 2pm (approx)

·           Wednesday 8th June – Ballindalloch Castle from 2pm (approx)

·           Thursday 9th June – Ballindalloch Castle

·           Thursday 9th June – Glenfiddich Distillery

·           Friday 10th June – Spey Valley Smokehouse from 2pm (approx)

It is hoped that £10,000 will be raised through this fantastic fundraising challenge, with all proceeds going directly towards the care of veterans and serving personnel supported by the veterans’ charity Erskine.

Catherine Cowie, Erskine fundraiser, said: “We are delighted to have the loyal support of the Gordon Highlanders 1914-1916, who through this testing fundraising challenge will raise vital funds for the care of our veterans across Scotland . I would urge the Speyside community to lend their support to this fantastic cause and also take a step back in time to enjoy the demonstrations on show.”

Erskine was established in 1916 to help provide care and artificial limbs for soldiers returning from The Great War.  Almost 95 years on it still prides itself on providing care to ex-Service men and women at five care homes across Scotland , as well as supporting Armed Forces personnel on active service.

The Gordon Highlanders Erskine March is sponsored by Spey Valley Smokehouse, Glenfiddich Distillery (William Grant & Sons) and Subsea7. It is also being supported by the Gordon Highlanders Museum , Aberdeen University History Department, Baxters, Aberlour Distillery and Ballindalloch Castle .
