Alabaré extends help for veterans to Portsmouth
Alabaré is looking to expand its work supporting ex-Service men and women by opening a new Home for Veterans in Portsmouth .
The homelessness charity, which already runs successful Homes for Veterans in Plymouth , Bristol and Weymouth , is now looking to expand further across the South in a bid to help those who have struggled since leaving the Armed Forces.
The charity’s first house exclusively for ex-Service personnel, opened in February 2009 in Plymouth , was full within its first week of opening. Demand for places has been extremely high and in its first year the team supported a total of 19 veterans. Another possible future project is currently being considered for Cardiff .
The proposed new supported housing project will provide a safe and supportive environment for 4 ex-Service men or women, hopefully extending to 7 or 8 in the future. The house enables them to make life changes and work towards living independently again, and staff will offer advice and guidance on employment, education and housing matters and can provide life skills training where needed. They will also signpost service users to other agencies that can provide specialist support with issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, mental health problems and drug and alcohol dependency.
