AGE SCOTLAND AND POPPYSCOTLAND LAUNCH NEW GUIDE FOR OLDER VETERANS

A new guide has been launched today (6 July 2010) aimed at veterans and their dependants in Scotland over the age of 55, produced by Age Scotland and veterans’ charity Poppyscotland.

Jim Tolson MSP, who is a member of the cross-party working group for supporting veterans, introduced the factsheet, entitled Older Veterans Living in Scotland, during a visit to Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory in Edinburgh.

Published by Age Scotland, with advice on content and development from Poppyscotland, the 27-page factsheet covers issues such as finance, health, housing, social opportunities, remembrance and employment, as well as service-related information, including veterans’ rights, medals and service records.

Jim Tolson MSP said: “As a member of the cross-party group for supporting veterans in Scotland, I am delighted to announce the publication of this new fact sheet, which offers a wealth of information for older veterans.  It is important that our veterans are given the support they deserve and that they can access information that is tailored to their needs.”

There is also a comprehensive directory of ex-Service charities, which offer specialist support to veterans in Scotland.

Poppyscotland Chief Executive Ian McGregor said: “We were pleased to work in partnership with Age Scotland to produce this valuable resource. Veterans’ needs can often be multiple and complex and is it gratifying to see that Age Scotland has recognised the many issues faced by this group. We hope this will go a long way to addressing some of the difficulties experienced by older veterans.”
Kay Hutcheson, Deputy Chief Executive of Age Scotland said: “Age Scotland is proud to be able to add this factsheet for veterans to the substantial catalogue we already produce to assist older people in improving their later lives. We are confident that it will get a similar response to our other factsheets, which are in constant demand.”
