Armed Forces Day 2011 – grants for event organisers

picture of Armed Forces Day flagOur thanks go out to everyone who organised an Armed Forces Day event in 2010. A lot of hard work was put in with some really great results. The focus fell on the hugely successful national event hosted by Cardiff, but tens of thousands of people attended many more events right across the UK.

Armed Forces Day in 2011 will again be an opportunity for the public to say thank you and recognise the outstanding contribution the Armed Forces community makes to this country.

We are encouraging community groups, local authorities and Veterans associations to organise Armed Forces Day events and show their support for the men and women of the Armed Forces community.

For those of you who are looking to host an event in 2011 there is the opportunity to receive some small grants from the Ministry of Defence (MOD). You can apply for these grants by filling in a funding application form which is then reviewed by the MOD’s Ceremonial Events and Commemorative Team. The grant can be used to help pay for items integral to the infrastructure of the event such as a marquee, PA system, stage etc but it cannot be used for items such as food and drink or for transporting people to another Armed Forces Day event.

Some of the things worth thinking about when applying for a grant include:

  • How the community can say thank you to Service personnel and Veterans.
  • What support and advice is readily available for Service personnel, Veterans and their dependants.
  • Showing how highly diverse the Armed Forces community is in background, nature of service, ethnicity, gender and age.
  • How the event could be appealing and stimulating to younger members of the community.
  • How you can deliver key messages and raise public awareness about the Armed Forces in your Community.

The Ministry of Defence will not fund an event in its entirety; it will expect the event organiser to put up at least 60% of the total cost of the event. Any funding awarded will be payable in advance of the event and will be paid electronically direct to your bank account. Funds will not be allocated to any event where the sole purpose is to raise money for a charity.

If you are thinking of hosting an event in 2011 and require the funding application form then please email in the first instance WO2 Gaynor Moore on DCDSPERS-ACDS-CECTWO@MOD.UK or alternatively email Gareth Legg on gareth.legg679@mod.uk. Please include a daytime telephone number so we can ring you to talk through your aspirations. Please also note that completed funding applications will only be accepted up until 31 March 2011.
