The Inventory of War Memorials

There is an ongoing project to record the location, form and style of all war memorials in the United Kingdom as well as the names commemorated on them. The Inventory of War Memorials http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/nav.002 is based in the Imperial War Museum (IWM) in Lambeth, South London and it is compiling a database of all war memorials. Founded in 1989 it has evolved from a three year project to study war memorial sculpture to a 20+ year permanent research project which has currently catalogued over 60,000 memorials, details of which can be searched in their online database:

http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/nav.002006002 . There are two full time members of staff who maintain the archive which contains written information and also a large collection of photographs numbering in excess of 150,000 images. Staff are supported by a national network of over 100 volunteer fieldworkers who record information about war memorials and submit it to the project. Further details about the project including full contact information can be found on their website.
