The Inventory of War Memorials
There is an ongoing project to record the whereabouts, form
and subject of all war memorials in the United Kingdom.
The Inventory of War Memorials is based in the Imperial War Museum
(IWM) in Lambeth, South London and it is compiling a database of all war
memorials. It has evolved from a three year project to study war memorial
sculpture to a 12 year research project which has currently catalogued
47,000 memorials, details of which have been recorded on a database. There
are several full time members of staff who maintain the archive which contains
written information and also a large collection of photographs numbering
in excess of 50,000 images. Researchers can access this information which
may be viewed by appointment in the Reading Room at the IWM in Lambeth,
South London. Full details are available by visiting their comprehensive
website or by writing to the Department of Printed Books Reading Room,
Main Building, Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, London SE1 6HZ. You may
also contact them by telephoning 020 7416 5353 / 5281 / 5445. or by e-mail
at memorials@iwm.org.uk.
