From Tudor times to present day
Latest SPVA video looks at the history of the War Pension Scheme
The Service Personnel and Veterans Agency has released the fifth in its series of videos highlighting a variety of items of interest to the Service and veterans community.
In the latest of their video releases, SPVA presenter Don Goldie looks at the history of the War Pension Scheme. Now running in conjunction with the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, the original scheme can trace its roots back to Tudor times.
The first formal scheme to compensate battle casualties and their families was conceived during the reign of Elizabeth I over 400 years ago. Then, an ordinary soldier wounded in battle could expect to receive around £10 per year for his injuries. Now in the reign of the second Elizabeth, a dedicated organisation, SPVA ensures a comprehensive package of welfare and pension services encompassing the wider Veterans Community.
SPVA Spokesman Laurie Manton said:
“This latest video provides a fascinating view of how the War Pension Scheme has evolved from its rudimentary form in the 15th century to the sophisticated organisation which exists today. Our series of videos continue to give a valuable insight into the business of SPVA and the Veterans Community and the public response continues to be encouraging.”
The videocast and podcast will be available to view on the Veterans-UK website, and on various social media sites such as iTunes and YouTube.
