Neil joined the Royal Navy in 1979 and served for almost 10 years, seeing active Service onboard HMS Intrepid during the Falklands conflict. He left the Navy in 1989 but found he had problems with sleeping, including anxiety attacks and nightmares. This was later diagnosed as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Neil says: “I first met Helen, my Veterans Welfare Manager about 2-3 years ago. We discussed setting up a PTSD help group, but at the time I wasn’t mentally prepared. As time progressed, I managed to get my mindset right and completed an initial counselling course at my local college. I spoke to Helen again and the encouragement from her has really spurred me on. I’m now just finishing a confidence building and self esteem course at SHIP – the Self Help Initiatives Project sponsored by the charity MIND. Once I complete this, I’ll have gained something monumental in terms of self achievement.” To find out how we can help you – call the Veterans-UK helpline on 0800 169 2277. |
