Fundraising Event by Combat Stress
On the 12th October an event was held at Aragon House in Parsons Green,
London to raise funds and awareness of the work carried out by The Ex-Services
Mental Welfare Society, better known as
Combat Stress,
The evening, organised by Nicholas Harrison, aimed to encourage a new generation of supporters to the only registered charity in the UK who provide specialist help and care to ex-service personnel who are suffering from psychological disabilities such as PTSD and depression as a result of their service.
After many years where the physical effects of peacekeeping duties, and of warfare, have been well documented, we are slowly beginning to have an appreciation of the mental suffering endured by British service personnel as a direct result of their respective military experiences. Provision of mental care - through nationwide Welfare Operations & Treatment centers - costs Combat Stress £5.8 million per year. The charity is currently helping over 8,000 veterans, and in the last year alone received 939 new referrals.
The event included an incredibly moving speech given by John Peters and raised £5,680. Also in attendance were the actors Jonathan Guy Lewis, and Miles Anderson, explorer Neil Laughton, National and European powerboat champion Sarah Donohue, Lt Col Stuart Tootle DSO, Lt Col Richard Westley MC, Robert Lawrence and the Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham, Minnie Scott Russell.
