Statistics
The MAP has more experience in examining 1990/1991 Gulf veterans than any other medical facility in the UK.
Around 3,500 patients have attended. 44 Op TELIC veterans and 138 PDVs have also been seen.
An analysis of 3000 1990/1991 Gulf veterans seen by the MAP so far found that 75% were well. Of those who were unwell, 81% of ill-health was accounted for in whole or part by psychiatric illness.
PTSD was the most common psychiatric diagnosis in 12% of this group.
The most common Gulf-related organic physical disorders were respiratory (e.g. Asthma) and skin (e.g. Dermatitis) disorders.
No unusual pattern of disease has emerged amongst veterans. Nor is there evidence of unusual neurological, nephrological, immunological or rheumatological disorders amongst Gulf veterans.
Satisfaction surveys indicate that the service provided by the MAP is well regarded by patients.
1990/1991 Gulf veterans thus complain of symptoms commonly seen in the general population and encountered by GPs and specialists working in the NHS and who are well placed to help them.
