Project Compass - How can your company help ex-Service personnel?
Project Compass exists to help homeless ex-Service personnel back into work. We provide personal development courses and career training to improve self-esteem and increase employability.
The problem
Each year some of the 24,000 service leavers do not make a successful transition
to civilian life due to several factors:
- They have served for so long that they find it difficult to adjust to civilian life
- Previously at their time of leaving, they received little or no resettlement training.
The solution
What are The Ministry of Defence, Business in the Community, key businesses
and ex-Service agencies doing to help?
Following a successful pilot, we have created a unique project called Project
Compass.
Its aim is to help homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless ex- Service
personnel, or those at risk of becoming homeless, to return to sustained
employment.
How does it work?
We work with:
- Homeless ex-Service personnel who want to get back into employment
- Service personnel who are deemed vulnerable on leaving the service.
We provide:
- Training opportunities and courses to build confidence, motivation and improve self esteem
- Specific employment related courses
- Tailor made Ready for Work Programme including 2 day pre employment training, 2-4 week work placement and post placement support by way of job coaching and mentoring
- Employment related support to assist with CV writing, interview preparation / technique and job search
- Referrals to relevant agencies for other types of required support.
How can your business help?
- Provide placement and employment opportunities
- Provide help with CV preparation and interview practice as part of the 2 day Ready for Work pre employment training
- Provide job coaches and mentors
- Provide financial and pro bono support.
