Role:
We are a national umbrella organisation set up to represent and support local
rent deposit schemes and encourage new ones to develop. We have almost
250 member-organisations across the UK.
Rent deposit schemes help house homeless and vulnerable people in private rented housing and can support clients to keep their tenancies. The rent deposit schemes are run by voluntary groups, local authorities, charities and churches and can be run as independent schemes or alongside other housing aid and advice.
To support our members we run networking events, subsidised training and an annual conference; we help projects to develop and share information; and we campaign on behalf of rent deposit schemes.

NOMAD Homeless Advice and Support Unit - Advice Centre
Area Covered: Sheffield
Activities:
Workers at the advice centre offer advice on most housing and homelessness problems in both face to face advice sessions and over the telephone to clients themselves and to other agencies. In addition, we give advice on related matters for example on welfare benefits, access to social fund, furniture provision and debt. We aim for a holistic approach with the emphasis on exploring the options with clients and promoting self-help when appropriate.
Enquiries at the advice centre range from those wanting access to emergency hostel provision, to those attempting to secure permanent accommodation through a variety of routes. Our client group is very varied; there is no typical NOMAD client. Not all the people we see are homeless or threatened with homelessness, we also see clients with a wide range of other housing problems including problems with disrepair, housing benefit, those suffering racial harassment, domestic violence or illegal eviction and those who simply need to move to more suitable accommodation.
Where necessary we make home visits to people who find it difficult to come into the advice centre. In addition we hold outreach sessions at the Archer Project and at one of Sheffield City Council’s interim accommodation schemes. We also accompany clients where appropriate to the homeless section, to housing and benefit offices and represent our clients in court and at local authority appeals.
When we are unable to help a client ourselves we refer them on to agencies with the appropriate skills thereby adopting a multi-agency approach to address the client’s needs.
