ARMED
FORCES
MEMORIAL
This is the
first national memorial dedicated to the men and women of the United
Kingdom Armed Forces (Regular and Reserve) killed on duty or as
a result of terrorist action since the Second World War. The Memorial
is located at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire.
The start date is 1 January 1948, which follows on directly from
the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which commemorates those
who died up to 31 December 1947. The one exception is for those
killed in Palestine who are included on the Memorial.
The Armed Forces Memorial was dedicated on Friday 12th October 2007.
The ceremony was attended by HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh,
HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. The Service
of Dedication was led by HG The Archbishop of Canterbury.
The Memorial is not a traditional war memorial that only remembers
those killed in conflict. It also recognises the many servicemen
and women who have given their lives while on duty and those killed
by terrorist action. The Memorial also helps to raise awareness
of the invaluable contribution made by the Armed Forces throughout
the world.
