War Pensions Committees
War Pension Committees (WPCs) have
existed since the 1920s, and their role is to support the welfare of war
pensioners and war widows, hearing their complaints on war pension issues
and making recommendations to the government and its agencies.
There are 13 War Pensions Committees throughout the United Kingdom, with separate committees in the Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland. Members of the WPCs are appointed by the Secretary of State and are independent of the Veterans Agency.
The four functions of the WPCs are;
- act as a medium for local consultation by Ministers, the
Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the VA on issues affecting war pensioners
and war widows;
- raise awareness of the War Pensions Sceme and the services
of WPWs in their areas;
- support and monitor the work of the WPWS in their areas;
- assist individual war pensioners and war widows with any problems or complaints they have regarding war pensions or act on their behalf, when appropriate.
