Public Servant of the Year Award 2002
Christine Corbett, a Higher Executive Officer from the Veterans Agency, was shortlisted
for the Public Servant of the Year Awards 2002.
In November 2000 Christine had been asked to help implement
arrangements for ex-gratia payments to former Far East Prisoners of War and
Civilian Internees.
It was not easy work for the people involved and Christine and her team had
to contact organisations like the International Red Cross and the Imperial
War Museum for help in tracing records relating to internees. Christine,
however, didn't stop there. She would contact individuals and ask them to
recall what their name may have been recorded as over 50 years ago and if
they knew of any organisation that may hold relevant records. This was a
very difficult and emotional task; asking people to remember things that
they had tried all their lives to forget. One lady, by chance, remembered
that her local Town Hall may have kept records. This proved to be the case
and provided Christine and her team with a lead to contact other Town Halls
for evidence.
For her compassionate and professional manner and her endeavours in investigating each and every claim Alan Burnham, VA Chief Executive, nominated Christine for the Public Servant of the Year Awards. From 360 nominations Christine was chosen as one of 33 finalists. Although Christine did not win the title her shortlisted place served as excellent recognition for Christine and her teams hard work and dedication and excellent recognition for the Veterans Agency.
